Digital Publishing means more reach and leverage for your published content. Why leverage your content you ask?
Your content produces more synergy and value for your brand if you purpose the presentation of the content to facilitate readership connection.
In plain terms this means posting your content to be accessible online. There are still plenty of ways to make the subscriber model work even when you "give away" content. I only use the term "give away" as most old school publishers will use these terms. Publishers that would worry that people won't pay for subscriptions if they have already tasted free content are usually not realizing the numbers of people they missed as subscribers becasue they did'nt want to chance paying in advance for what's behind the iron door.
You can alwys leave out some features or exclusives for subscribers only. People that like what you are offering will more gladly pay your $29 subscription after spending 20 minutes on your website than if you greet them with a palm forward hand and state "you must subscribe to read here." Try it for a month, I'll bet you maximize your revenue by getting more content and people to your site by offering something of value.
Here are some easy and profitable methods to extend your print magazine content:
- Website Content
Create a list of articles and features from each issue that you will populate in your website article content management system. You can add one new article online each wee to keep the website updated with new content each week. Use your website RSS feeds to insure a constant stream of new and valuable stories on your website.
- e-Newsletters
Use your print magazine articles as the basis for feature development and reader feedback and send this additional content out with your email newsletters
- Digital Edition
Add dynamic media and dynamic advertising to your digital edition. Before your next print issue is released, send the current digital edition issue out to groups and association as a complimentary issue to help build subscribers or readers.
- Podcast
This one sounds harder to accomplish than it is. Make an issue summary podcast of your current issue. List your podcast in iTunes and add the audio to your digital edition so people can listen while the browse your online version at work. Again, your podcast should provide a featured articles summary - make them hungry to go read the full article.
- Publicity
Use other publicity channels to release promotions for your up-coming issues. Press releases and media center information packages to other publishers that may also pickup your stories as news.
